Filling Station Reprieve

EDITORIAL

Congratulations to Pat MacDonald, the Pier/lnver Service Station, on the success of his efforts and of those who entered the lists in his support in earning a reprieve for the Station. We trust that in the fullness of time the reprieve will be remitted into a permanent pardon. It is invidious in such causes to single out particular individuals; so Pat and the others concerned would like to express their gratitude for all the help and support given. Tribute too must be paid to Esso for their constructiveness in reconsidering their position.

The importance of all this is encapsulated in the words of Mr Tom McKeith, Esso's Scottish Regional Manager (from the report in the “Press & Journal”). 'We were conscious of the publicity and the views of some very sensible people and came to the conclusion that we should not close this station’. Public opinion can be mobilised and can mobilise itself to effect. This is a point we will return to in our assessment of the role of the Community Council.
